Super Visa

The Canada Super Visa is a multiple-entry temporary resident visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It allows them to visit Canada for up to 5 years per entry without needing to renew their status, and the visa itself is valid for up to 10 years. Below is an overview of the Super Visa process based on the latest available information as of March 17, 2025.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a Super Visa, both the applicant (parent or grandparent) and the host (child or grandchild in Canada) must meet certain criteria:

For the Applicant (Parent or Grandparent):

  • Relationship: Must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Medical Insurance: Must provide proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company (or an approved foreign insurer, though currently only Canadian providers are designated). The insurance must:
    • Cover healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation.
    • Provide at least $100,000 in emergency coverage.
    • Be valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry.
  • Medical Exam: Must undergo an immigration medical examination by a panel physician approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to prove admissibility on health grounds.
  • Intent to Leave: Must demonstrate ties to their home country (e.g., family, property, or job) to show they will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.
  • Admissibility: Must not be inadmissible to Canada due to criminality, security risks, or health issues beyond what is assessed in the medical exam.

For the Host (Child or Grandchild):

  • Status: Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (or, in specific cases, a registered Indian under the Indian Act).
  • Financial Support: Must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) based on the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) table, which varies by family size. For example:
    • Family of 2: $45,348 CAD (2025 LICO estimates based on trends).
    • Family of 4: $61,332 CAD.
    • Add approximately $7,000–$8,000 per additional person
