Visit Visa

To visit Canada, most travelers need either a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on their country of citizenship. A visitor visa is required if you’re from a country that isn’t visa-exempt.

Basic Eligibility for a Visitor Visa

To qualify, you must:

  • Have a valid passport (typically valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from Canada).
  • Be in good health (a medical exam may be required in some cases).
  • Prove you have ties to your home country (e.g., job, family, property) to show you’ll return after your visit.
  • Convince an immigration officer you’ll leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay (usually up to 6 months, though the border officer may adjust this).
  • Show you have enough money to support yourself during your stay (the amount depends on your plans—e.g., staying with friends requires less than staying in a hotel).

You may be inadmissible if you have a criminal record, pose a security risk, or lack sufficient funds.
